BBQ 12 O CLOCK FIRST SUNDAY of the Month
ALL welcome, food and drinks supplied. BYO alcohol

WELCOME : Hi to all members.

Hopefully all of you got to see and read the previous news letter, and got something out of it.

A lot of flying has been going on over the last month especially on the joy flight side It seems that most people are using their Christmas gift vouchers now that the weather has cooled and the winds are calmer. I must thank those pilots that helped to do the joy flights especially while Ian has been away ..... Thank you. Ashley Osborne

WHATS ON
Some good ideas are in motion about what we will be doing in the near future to increase the fun aspect of the club. We are in the process of designing a "flying rally" where two pilots will fly together. Both pilots will be working together during the flight and shall decide if one fly's there and one fly's back or you take it in turns on the way etc. etc. . Both pilots will be awarded the same score after the flight. A prize will be awarded to both winning pilots on the day and scores will be recorded for a club champion at the end of the year, to be presented at the clubs Christmas party. If there is a draw at the end of the year a fly off will be run between those pilots. Pilots flying together will be selected from a hat on the day. Flights will be to various locations (changing each month) on a time trial bases with points awarded for least amount of engine time. Pilots will be allowed to climb to 3300ft before switching off and radioing to the club before starting their task from above the club at the airfield to their destination turn point .(A photo must be taken at the turn point to prove they got there) then they must make their way back to the airfield and land. Tacho times will be recorded at start up and must be recorded at 3300ft, units used after reaching 3300ft will attract a 5 point per unit penalty to be deducted from a starting score of 1000 points. The aim is to use as little engine time as possible to complete the task. This competition is based on FUN remember FUN , cheating will be possible.... which is why pilots will be selected from a hat. So as to keep each other honest. The first comp will be held on [TBN]. All interested pilots register your names ASAP with Ashley Osborne so we can organize a schedule to coincide with the clubs activities.

Bob Williams has said also that the Boonah club wants us to go there for a trip as they want to fly our motor gliders.. We are organizing a trip out there on Friday June 2nd staying overnight and returning on the Saturday late afternoon. We will be taking YHB, ZDD, AND FFN . Brian will fly ZDD Russell FFN Macca YHB. Therefore three people will be able to fly with either of them the rest will need to drive. Boonah has a bunk house which people can stay in or you may camp. Places in the gliders will fill fast so first in best dressed so they say. If you want to fly an ordinary glider, get your aerotow endorsement or just want some good conditions to fly in in our gliders come along , call Bob Williams to get your name on the list. bobwill@bigpond.com Tom Grierson has volunteered his expertise on map reading , Tom has had lots of experience on this topic as he has taught it in GA flying, at this moment a date has not been set but will be scheduled in soon to coincide with a BBQ.

CLUB NEWS:

The club BBQ for May was a great success for all involved, about 20 people turned up for something to eat and a relaxing afternoon was had by all . These BBQ's will become a regular event at the club and are being sponsored by local businesses. John & Jane from Baystay Bed & Breakfast, Byron Bay 0266857509 sponsored the May Club BBQ and Russell White from Dropbears.com will sponsor the next one and also a request that someone sponsor future ones. Cost is about $100 and tax deductible for businesses. Contact John Witham 66857509 re details of how it works.

There has been a few guys go solo last month. Some of you met Franky from from Hong Kong. He came down and spent 10 days under instruction from Ian going solo in YHB on the afternoon of his 9th day, and completing his flights for his "A" certificate early in the morning of his 10th day before flying back to Hong kong later in the afternoon... Well done to Franky.

Another was Alistair Gray also going solo in YHB after making a return after 5 months or so away from flying Well done also to Alistair.

Then finally Paddy Harrington has completed all his flying training to solo stage, however Paddy has an eyesight problem and is unable to go solo at this stage, maybe one day medicine will fix the problem for paddy and he can live his dream. Anyone who knows Paddy will agree he is as keen as anything to fly ( even if it's doing full aerobatics routines with Andy in his Pitts Special) and is constantly looking for someone to fly with, he is very capable and flies well so if anyone wants to be paddys lookout (you must have a C certificate or higher) paddy will take you up.

Guy Wilson has now qualified for his C certificate after getting all his times out at Warwick, and is now clocking up hours faster than Big Ben. Well done to all .

TECH TALK:

XJX motorfalke has progressed a bit further and is now at the painters getting the cowls painted and the forward section of the fuselage painted and blended in to the rear section. Ian has made the striping at the forward section look really cool with the words FALKE 2200 J for Jabiru painted on the side . We all eagerly await its return from the painters looking good to keep us motivated to carry on further. Alan Rundle is continuing with his efforts now working on the wing/wheel struts and getting the wings ready for rigging. The main pins are also in progress of being made up as the original pin has been misplaced and unable to be found. Next job is to make up the seating, apparently it will be copied from YHB as everyone is impressed by the comfort of the seating in that glider, then the instrument panel which is half completed will be fitted and wired up followed by trimming out the cockpit area with carpet to make it even more comfortable .The parcel shelf behind the cockpit area is all finished and looks great with a storage bucket also. Once all that is done XJX can be rigged and all minor adjustments and tightening of nuts and bolts etc. can be done followed by a form 2 inspection and then its maiden test flight can be done... So not too far to go now ... Watch this space for progress reports in the next newsletter.

ZDD Dimona has had a problem with the battery charging which has now been rectified buy topping up the water in the battery, ask Ian for the photo and see if you can see any water in the cells ... Bet you can't. So now the battery can actually hold a charge all is well. GLC Motorfalke is getting the motor pulled out soon to be sent off for a recondition, She looks a bit sad with her wings off in the corner of the hanger, a little life less right now eagerly waiting to get back in the sky, as we all are to see her back up there. Getting back on track now how good it is going to be in a couple of months when all the gliders will be flying.... can't wait. PS We are always looking for help getting XJX back in the air, so if anyone can spare some time we will definitely find you some thing to work on. Contact Ian if you can help.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard this piece of writing, but for those who haven't this was printed on the inside cover of an American Soaring Society calendar from last year and I think it sums up why we fly.

LAST LIGHT:
I have scaled to heights where the air is thin and the temperature is cold, but I am not a mountain climber. My eyes have witnessed delicate yellow shafts of sunlight skimming across the surface of, silvery lakes, but I am not a nature photographer.
Earth's intense fury has been exercised countless times before me, but I have never been near a volcano.
Hues of blue and green from our world's abundant palette will always remain in my memory, but I am not a landscape painter. My passion is travelling the invisible highways of adventure. Wings that appear lifeless on the ground, suddenly spring to life during tow. Their shape and strength carry me to places unseen and altitudes never before conquered. I am thankful that photography can capture and share what few have ever experienced. I am thankful that I am a glider pilot. (unknown author)

Finally from me, the days are just beautiful this time of year with calm winds and clear sky's good clouds and the heat has moved away for another year , PERFECT GLIDING WEATHER so come down to the club and fly .Until next time, happy landings. Ashley Osborne. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SUNDAY 20TH AUGUST MACCAS NOTES : Attn. Charter Pilots - You are required to give a safety briefing. You should cover how to release harness and how to open canopy and what not to touch during the flight. I would add how to OPEN canopy window - i.e. pull towards you and slide back. Unfortunately the pop out of passenger side of Dimona got broken and was lost before I could get to repair same with the glue which Guy picked up in Brisbane. The cost of complete new window is about $300 which I believe should be paid by the club and not the owner as was caused by an unbriefied joyflighter. Also ONLY lift by canopy frame and brief passenger not to touch the perspex at all

Here are some questions for people to think about and feel free to ask about answers as do not expect to know all the answers - and I have more for next issue and you are welcome to send me more questions
