Flying is a lot like playing a musical instrument - you're doing so many things and thinking of so many other things, all at the same time. It becomes a spiritual experience. Something wonderful happens in the pit of your stomach. ~ Dusty McTavish

Changing your email address
(in answer to a request for a forum, 091215) A forum or bulletin board may be handy for the club but this message list can function well if people undserstand how it works: Replies go back to the list so everyone sees them. The idea of this is to encourage people to engage in a club-wide conversation. DON'T bother replying just to say "me too" unless a discussion specifically asks for everyones opinion. If you have something valid to contribute to the converstaion, do so. Keep replies brief. Everyone has an opinion but no-one wants to read 3 pages of blurb. Also don't add attachments unless really necessary as many people don't want to download them. Remember the club (and email list) is about flying gliders. If you message is relevant to that, send it to the list. If not send it to your friends instead. The advantage of an email discussion group is that the messages arrive in people's Inbox. They don't have to visit a forum or bulleting board to read messages. Greg Wilson
Letter from JD Dec 2009 I would like you to use this list productively as I am still seeing too many emails and replies appearing on this site that are primarily directed to just one person. Things like "Hey me too" or "Great one", "That's what I do" or "I hear you" etc. Also some members like to make silly comments to, I suppose, show off their special genius to all the others in the club. I'd like to repeat EVERYTIME THAT YOU HIT THAT REPLY BUTTON IT GOES OUT TO 40 PEOPLE. Most of these are simply not interested in having their email address clogged with meaningless "chit chat". Also Russell's subtle, or is it not so subtle, point about deleting previous messages to save space still applies. I heartily endorse emailers who are attempting to disseminate knowledge and give practical tips on flying to other members, or those who are seeking answers to a particular problem that they feel others might be able to help with, or to make an announcement of some sort to all. That's what this site is all about! If you wish to discuss the weather with your mate or want to work out the details of that next trip away then you should get their email address off the list and chat to them privately or even make up your own group list, like some of our members already do.
